Figure 2.The adverse effects of high glucose on pancreatic β-cell function have been described in the partial pancreatectomy rat model. The changes in function and structure have been divided into 4 phases. Phase 1 is “successful adaptation†and occurs from 0 – 3 weeks post-pancreatectomy. Phase 2 is “mild decompensation†and occurs between week 2 and 8. Phase 3 is “severe decompensation†and is observed between week 6 – 16.
